Hannes Snellman Issues a Statement to the Ministry of Justice in Favour of Finland Adopting the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Arbitration
28 September 2018
Hannes Snellman believes that Finland has vast potential to develop its status as a suitable forum for international dispute resolution and that one of the important steps in this process is to adopt the UNCITRAL Model Law on International Arbitration.
Upon the Finland Chamber of Commerce’s plea regarding adoption of the Model Law, the Ministry of Justice is currently investigating whether amendments to the current Finnish Arbitration Act from 1992 are necessary. Earlier this month, the Ministry held a seminar – attended by a number of dispute resolution lawyers, among others – to initiate discussion regarding the current Arbitration Act.
The seminar attendees were also invited to issue written statements on the matter. We are pleased to have an opportunity to take a stance on this topic, as we believe that adopting the Model Law and the internationally accepted best practices therein is necessary for Finland to become a credible player in international dispute resolution. Finland should not be a bystander on the arena of international trade and cooperation.
