21 February 2025

You work at Hannes Snellman as a legal AI analyst. Can you tell us about your journey here; how did it all begin?

I have always been passionate about merging law with technology. While studying for my LL.M. in Oslo, I looked for opportunities where legal expertise could work closely with innovative tech solutions. Even though Norway was ahead in this field, I was determined to return to Finland and introduce fresh ideas locally. That is when I discovered Hannes Snellman, a firm known for its strong legal practice and its practical approach to exploring new ideas.

I started as a tech trainee, eager to learn and contribute. During that time, I saw how the team was open to experimenting with new technologies, especially around AI for legal applications. After my trainee period, I was given the opportunity to step into the role of a legal AI analyst, where I now lead Hannes Snellman’s efforts to develop and integrate AI into our everyday work. This journey has been both challenging and rewarding, and it continues to inspire me to find better ways to serve our clients.

What truly sets Hannes Snellman apart is our culture of openness and experimentation. From the very beginning, as a trainee, my ideas were welcomed and quickly turned into real projects. I love when someone asks whether a specific legal task can be enhanced with AI and the answer is always “let’s try it!” This can-do attitude—combined with ample opportunities for personal growth, such as HS Academy sessions and guest lectures—has made every day here both challenging and inspiring. It is not just about adapting to change; it is about leading it through examples.

You have an interesting background of studying abroad. Can you tell us about that?

Studying abroad has been a key part of my journey. I started my legal studies in Tallinn, where I earned my bachelor’s degree and experienced a vibrant, collaborative academic community. Later, I pursued an LL.M. in Oslo with a focus on privacy, data protection, and technology. This programme, offered by one of Norway’s leading institutions in ICT law, introduced me to emerging topics like AI, robotics law, and cybersecurity. These experiences not only broadened my perspective on the legal field but also inspired me to blend legal practice with innovative tech solutions.

How would you describe your role as a legal AI analyst?

In my role as a legal AI analyst, I am essentially the bridge between the AI technology and legal practice at Hannes Snellman. I lead our AI initiatives by developing, testing, and deploying bespoke tools that streamline our work and unlock new insights. Whether it is optimising contract reviews or exploring entirely new applications of AI, I am at the forefront of turning innovative ideas into practical solutions. My position is a blend of tech know-how and legal acumen, ensuring that our AI projects are not only groundbreaking but also directly address our lawyers’ everyday challenges.

What can we expect from AI in the legal field?

The future of AI in law looks incredibly promising. While AI may not replace lawyers, it is transforming how we analyse, draft, and manage vast amounts of legal information. Imagine AI tools that not only streamline routine tasks but also offer intelligent recommendations, assist in risk analysis, and even tailor solutions to meet individual client needs. At Hannes Snellman, we are actively exploring innovative projects that hint at a future where AI serves as a powerful co-pilot enhancing our work and empowering legal professionals to focus on what truly matters.

What would you say are the future lawyers’ top three qualities from a technology and innovation perspective?

In today’s rapidly evolving legal landscape, I believe future lawyers need to cultivate these three qualities:

  1. Technological Literacy. Understanding and working with modern tools, whether it is AI platforms, automation software, or advanced document management systems, is no longer optional.

  2. Creative Problem-Solving. With technology continuously introducing new challenges, the ability to think innovatively and develop effective solutions is essential.

  3. Adaptability. The legal world is in constant flux. Lawyers who can quickly learn new skills, embrace remote or virtual environments, and stay ahead of emerging trends will be best positioned to succeed.

It is not a question of whether AI will take jobs; rather, the real game-changers will be those who harness AI to enhance their practice.

Hannes Snellman is cooperating with Päätös, a podcast focused on decision-making. Inspired by the podcast, we would like to conclude this interview by asking you about decision-making — what would you say is the most significant decision you have made when it comes to your professional life?

The most significant decision I have made in my professional life was choosing to embrace the intersection of AI, technology, and law, even when some people doubted whether it could become a viable career path. Initially, I envisioned myself following the traditional path of a lawyer, progressing through associate positions. However, the opportunity to work with something as innovative and dynamic as AI was a decision I felt compelled to make.

This choice has been transformative, both in my career and personal life. It has provided me with a broader perspective on the legal field and a deeper understanding of AI from a technical standpoint. I firmly believe that every legal firm needs an AI specialist within their ranks to stay ahead in this rapidly evolving landscape. What I find most rewarding is that it feels less like a job and more like a passion, something I would gladly engage with even in my free time. I have no regrets about this decision; it has been an incredible journey that continues to inspire and challenge me every day.
