The Consumer Ombudsmen of Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway met in Helsinki in the beginning of May to discuss several consumer protection issues relating to the digital society. The topics discussed varied from consumer legislation in the digital economy to consumer protection issues in connection with the Internet of Things. One of the discussed themes was data protection and how it has become an increasingly important consumer protection issue.
Against this background, the Consumer Ombudsmen are calling for closer cooperation between the supervisory authorities of data protection and consumer protection in the Nordics in order to ensure consumer protection in the digital markets. The discussions and cooperation between the Nordic Consumer Ombudsmen will continue and we can expect the authorities to pay close attention to how these issues are handled by online retail companies in the Nordics also in the future.
