For many years, it has been apparent that the existing Children’s Hospital in Helsinki is outdated and partly not suitable for its purpose. A support association (Uusi Lastensairaala Tukiyhdistys 2017) was established in 2012 for raising money for a new hospital. In 2013, a support foundation (Stiftelsen Nya Barnsjukhusets Stöd – Uuden Lastensairaalan Tukisäätiö) (the ”Foundation”) was registered. The purpose of the Foundation is to build and own the new hospital and to lease it to the hospital operator (Helsingin ja Uudenmaan Sairaanhoitopiiri or “HUS”). The structure of the project is unique – the financing is based on the support from the Finnish Government, HUS, bank loans, and donations from the public. To date, private and corporate donors have donated more than EUR 38 million to the new hospital, which is unprecedented in respect to both the value and timing. The Foundation has also been able to enter into a number of valuable in-kind arrangements with respect to IT-applications, licences, building materials, etc. The first part of the New Children’s Hospital is expected to be completed by the end of 2017 and the hospital will be taken into use by the end of 2018.

Hannes Snellman has contributed to the project on a pro bono basis through the Foundation and its governing bodies.

C.G.E. Mannerheim, the Marshal of Finland, (1867-1951) served as the commander of the Finnish forces during the Second World War and as the President of the Republic of Finland. Marshal Mannerheim made significant contributions to Finnish independence, politics, and society at large. The Mannerheim Foundation manages the estate of Marshal Mannerheim in accordance with its statutes.

Hannes Snellman has managed the legal affairs of the foundation since its establishment, and our lawyers have acted as permanent secretaries and board members of the foundation. Mr Johan Snellman (partner, retired) has served the foundation for over forty years. Our partner Klaus Ilmonen currently serves as the managing director of the foundation. He has been deployed with Finnish forces in Afghanistan, Kosovo and Lebanon.

The Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation is committed to furthering contemporary cultural dialogue on a global scale, and Helsinki offers an optimal opportunity to continue to expand this programme. The Guggenheim has long had the ambition to open a fifth museum in Helsinki.

The Guggenheim Helsinki Supporting Foundation was established in the spring of 2014 to support the development of the Guggenheim Helsinki museum. Initially, the foundation supported an open, international architectural competition to generate ideas for the museum building. The winner of the design competition, which attracted entries and attention from all over the world, was announced in June 2015. The Guggenheim Helsinki Supporting Foundation serves its purpose by collecting and using funds to directly or indirectly carry out the tasks set out in its mission statement.

Hannes Snellman has been involved in the work of the foundation since its inception. Our partner Johan Aalto is a member of the board of the foundation and our associate Robert Tallberg serves as the secretary of the foundation.

The Walter and Andrée de Nottbeck Foundation was established in 1970 by Walter and Andrée de Nottbeck. The Foundation supports environmental research in the Baltic Sea, mainly at the Tvärminne Zoological Station of the University of Helsinki. The Foundation provides grants for postdoctoral scientists and postgraduate students as well as grants for students for their M. Sc. theses annually in the region of EUR 500,000. The Foundation also supports research projects, the recently established senior research fellow scheme, and a new scheme to strengthen international collaboration. In order to strengthen and co-ordinate the research sponsored by the Foundation, the Foundation has donated funds to the University of Helsinki for a professorship at the Tvärminne Zoological Station.

Hannes Snellman has been engaged in the Foundation since its establishment by providing legal and governance support, and our lawyers have continuously acted as board members. The Foundation was established in 2006 with the objective of preserving and developing the Eastern Orthodox Christian culture and tradition in Finland.

In order to fulfil this task, the Foundation has established several corporations and a cultural centre, called Sofia, in the eastern archipelago of Helsinki. The Sofia Centre organises seminars, lectures, art exhibitions, concerts, and retreats. It also offers premises for visiting artists and scholars, as well as provides an inspiring forum for an ecumenical and cultural dialogue and mutual learning in the context of today’s challenges in the EU and East-West relations.

Hannes Snellman manages the legal affairs of the Foundation. Our Associate Henrik Hautamäki serves as the Foundation’s prime legal counsel. The work provided by Henrik and several other of our lawyers has included complex corporate and real estate transactions along with general corporate matters.

The Stiftelsen 7:nde Mars Fonden foundation was established in 1931 by Senator Theodor Wegelius. The Foundation aims at supporting humanitarian and generally beneficial purposes. The Foundation realises its purpose by granting contributions annually in the region of EUR 250,000. The Foundation strives to support socially vulnerable groups and has specifically highlighted social work for children and adolescents.
